Back to School Chiropractic Tips

The exciting summer months are always too short, but it’s time again to get into the mode of returning

to the school year. While people in Colorado are known for their active lifestyles, getting back into the

routine of sitting in a classroom all day can take a physical toll on the students, too. Of course, the kids

would rather be outside running around – or maybe they’d rather by just lying around the house for

another couple of months.

Whatever the reason, going back to school can be a shock on the system. Finding a pediatric

chiropractor near you can help with some of these issues, but there is also a lot of work that can be

done to keep the body and mind healthy before the kid plops into that desk for another school year.

Mind Those Muscles

Since the majority of the school day is spent sitting in class, it’s crucial to pay attention to your posture.

Keep your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the floor. It will be tough for some students,

but also try and avoid slouching or hunching over your desk. Posture can also be boosted by choosing

the right backpack. If your school requires students to carry a backpack, opt for one with padded straps

that offers good support. Distribute the weight evenly and avoid overloading it. Even if it might not be

the coolest look, use both shoulder straps to prevent muscle strain.

School days and study sessions can get long, so make sure the students are taking short breaks to

stretch their muscles. By focusing on stretches that target your neck, shoulders, back, and hips, it can

help prevent stiffness and reduce the risk of developing tension-related pains in the future. Desks at

school might not be the best, but try and set up an ergonomic workspace at home for studying, if

possible. Position your monitor, desk, and chair to support good posture. You can also use a cushion for

lumbar support to maintain the curve of your lower back.

Stay Active & Stay Hydrated

Even though the bulk of the days as a student are spent sitting, it’s important for the kids to remain

active outside of school hours. Engaging in regular physical activity will help keep their minds and bodies

in good shape. Exercise improves circulation, reduces stress, and boosts concentration. Make sure

activities like yoga, walking, running, biking, or other sports are incorporated into your daily routine.

Proper hydration is crucial for overall health and concentration. Colorado is dry by nature, so many are

generally prepared with plenty of water when enjoying all of the outdoor activities. However, it’s just as

important to stay hydrated during the school day. Drinking plenty of water consistently throughout the

day will help keep your body and mind functioning properly, giving the student the best chance to get

the most out of their learning experience.
